Artist statement

I love oils and acylics – but one of my favourite media is watercolour where I enjoy the spontaneity and immediacy of this medium especially when working out of doors. My aim is to create a believable space that invites the viewer to share the same emotional sensations as I experienced when first deciding on a particular subject.

In recent years I have turned more towards a mixed media approach in order to achieve the desired effect of light and atmosphere.

I find inspiration in the East Anglian countryside with its ‘big skies’ and open landscape and in its small towns.

The light here is much softer than that of the west coast of France where I have also travelled and painted for several years, enjoying the greater contrasts that a strong sun gives.

I like to work quickly but feel that a good drawing ability and structure is essential even if the paint is applied in a loose manner. I feel the ability to draw well is fundamental to achieving good results in creating a picture.
