I have quite a demand for a higher volume of courses, both locally and internationally and I can't possibly apply quantum physics to myself yet and be in two places at the same time! So I have looked into the integration of established and experienced artists into my teaching activities. I am pleased that I found some great artists / teachers. So on this course you will actually be able to benefit from a team of teachers who like to work together. This should give you a wealth information as you have available the experience of two artists - for the same price.

A list of accommodation links in the area can be found here, please contact me with any questions. I have a few contacts regarding rooms in families that are very inexpensive, if that is a preferred option. Most inexpensive hotel accommodation is at around £ 43 per night and B&B for £ 15 per night; family room accommodation, if available, is about £ 60 per week.

This is a two week course depending on numbers for both. Two weeks are advisable as my experience over the years has shown that the students really get into their work and enjoy it tremendously – so time flies and the students feel that even two weeks isn't enough! If it is really not possible for you to do two weeks, one week is possible.

Figure vs. Landscape
The two week summer course will be one week figure, one week landscape again, the ideal combination, tested by time and not available anywhere else. There is a close connection between the two subjects – not obvious to everyone at first – but the figure embraces everything in concentrated form that we find in nature: life energy, all manner of line, shape and form, textures, tone and colours existing in space. Because these are all “condensed” in a figure, there is much to learn and one never becomes bored with it. That's also why I often call it an "animated landscape". It teaches all elements one needs to know to paint anything at all – and that is why it has been used for centuries in art schools teaching painting until it has almost dropped out since the 60ies and 70ies. The mistake was to think that one doesn’t need it for modern art. But: understanding all the elements one learns in drawing and painting the figure, one knows how to deal with any subject and any formal problem, no matter in which direction the artist develops. The landscape week is really relaxing after life painting and drawing as you have already become familiar with many elements which you will also encounter in landscape and the connection between the two becomes really evident. Students that have learnt to draw / paint the figure first, found landscape really easy, the special issues particular to landscape space and colour will be addressed directly. So, this course will cover all interests and inclinations and take you just a step further!
Everyone felt last year, as usual, that two weeks are too short – even the people that thought two weeks might be long! The first week figure and second week landscape proved once more to be the ideal combination. The practical instruction you get and the theory course packs to take away with you give you an extremely good foundation to work for years coming. The ground covered in the course is really comprehensive, beginners again produced good paintings right away – and artist reviewed their work and really benefited.

Models and Pose
I have an extensive list of models and book one for our course. We will be setting up the pose for the week together as a group to make sure everyone has a good angle on an interesting pose. The model will be set in a setting with props, so that there is an “environment” to the figure, rather than the figure alone, which means that you can be selective about your focus of composition and include still life elements to your liking.
Sites for Landscape Painting
The Sussex landscape is famous for its green, rolling hills and old trees, manor houses and castles. Someone well travelled said to me last year that the trees here are different, they are personalities. A beautiful landscape, sometimes dangerously picturesque! I have explored the possibilities to make good and interesting paintings, have selected and photographed sites of special interest, that offer combinations of landscape with other interesting elements the painter can choose to set a counterpoint of interest in his composition. Before we embark on our week of landscape painting, we will decide together where we go, so that everyone is happy with the subject of their painting.

Course hours are every day for 6 hours, excluding breaks, starting between 9am and 10am, depending on the group's preference.
If you wish to keep painting or drawing after the course hours - because you simply can't stop -, you are welcome to continue outside or in the studio.
Hours are flexible, so there is time to "holiday" or go off on excursions or take advantage of activities at the monastery.
After a short introductory lecture introducing the next subject of painting / drawing or technique, you will be able to work intensively with my support. Every step of how to build up a work successfully will be covered so that you will most likely share the experience of many of my students, that you have learnt in one painting what you normally would have learnt over quite a period of time.
I am fully available during the course hours. In my experience it is impossible to give full individual attention and value for money if the teacher paints while the students work. A teacher has to keep close track of a participant's work and his personal development to able to advise the exact right thing at the right moment. In addition I keep track of progress with digital photos which has proven invaluable in not only documenting achievements but also demonstrating to students where the development of a work has gone wrong and why. You may be familiar with the problem of "overworking" or spoiling areas that worked very well and you don't know how you did it…
After the course time we usually have a short group discussion , where we look at the work, progress is reviewed and one can learn from each other, which has proven to be quite invaluable for students.
At the end of the course, we will have a final group "crit" and look at the progress and achievements of the course. The results of my courses have been spectacular throughout. People from varied backgrounds and abilities from beginner to advanced made impressive progress in only two weeks. The detailed theory course pack covers most aspects of painting / drawing and will be a valuable source of information to take away with you and fall back onto in your work after this course.
Each participant will receive a certificate at the end of the course.
